  • IELTS Speaking: Part 3

    Speaking Part 3 is based upon the topic of the task from part 2.

    It explores in depth some questions related to that task. For instance, if your part 2 was about an old person you know well, part 3 may be about the position of the elderly in society, healthcare for old people or their relations with the younger members of their families.

    It is important that you understand the question. If you don't, ask the examiner. You may pretend even that you're not asking them to merely explain the question to you, but that you're seeking interpretation. (What do you mean exactly? What do you mean by saying ____________?)

    Try to give longer answers. Either develop your position, or explore the issue if you're unable to start with your position.

    You may use linking words to help you keep the response longer:

    Basically, I hold an opinion that__________. The reason for it is that ________. For example, ________. However, it doesn't mean that ___________ . In fact, __________ . Having said that, _________ . All in all, ______ .

    Since the answers tend to be longer in this part, summarize yourself in the end. It will also show a greater degree of control over your responses.

    Do not worry if your answer is not very conclusive. You may ramble on, investigating the issue from various perspectives, changing your opinion etc. It won't affect the result.

    Do not pause for long. Again, analyze the question, your attitude to it, your thoughts. Anything is better than silence, even the most thoughtful one.

    Think which words you're most likely to use a lot. Good examples include: think, advantage, problem, example, situation, society or good.

    Find synonyms for them.

    Prepare collocations with these words (and their synonyms). If you have little time to prepare to the exam, it is the single best thing you can do:

    I think = I hold that / As far as I'm concerned, ___ / I'm of the belief that _____
    problem = dilemma / issue / concern

    Some collocations:

    verb + noun
    regard as a problem / tackle the problem of ___ / alleviate the/this problem

    adjective + noun

    an acute problem / a crucial problem / an urgent problem
