Evidence used to establish genuineness of relationship

Set out below are details of material that can be useful in proving that a marriage or relationship is genuine.

Photographs:

a. Photographs of the couple together taken at various times during their relationship.
b. Wedding photographs.
Photographs taken with a camera that records the date on the photograph are particularly useful.
Vidoes are not accepted by DIMIA.

Financial documents

a. Documents showing joint ownership of property such as real estate, motor vehicles and household appliances.
b. Statements from banks and other financial institutions showing joint accounts, credit cards statements, loans etc.
c. Documents showing money sent from one partner to the other.

Evidence of communication between partners

a. Cards and letters passing between the partners.
b. Telephone accounts (ie. phone cards are used choose a company (such as a Global Gossip) which will provide a printout of numbers called as phonecards are of no use as evidence of numbers called unless a printout can be obtained.
c. E-mails (printouts).

Evidence of shared accommodation

a. Leases, rent receipts, telephone bills, electricity bills and other documents in both names.
b. Letters and envelopes addressed to both partners.
c. Letters and envelopes addressed to either partner at the same address.

General evidence

a. Documents showing that both partners are members of religious, social, cultural or sporting clubs.
b. Evidence that the relationship has been declared to government departments including the Department of Housing and the Australian Taxation Office.
c. Evidence that the partners have declared their relationship to employers, superannuation funds, and insurance companies.
d. Drivers licenses showing the addresses at which the couple live together.
e. Evidence of trips taken together including airline tickets and hotel booking documents.
f. Wills making provision for each other.
g. Life insurance policies naming each other as beneficiaries.

Defacto Relationships

As defacto partners must usually show that they have lived together for at least 12 months before the date of the application it is very important to provide documents showing when the partners first started living together.
