A letter
(Task: You are unhappy about a plan to make your local airport bigger and increase the number of flights. You live near the airport.
Write a letter to your local newspaper. In your letter:
• Explain where you live
• Describe the problem
• Give reasons why you do not want this development)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to express my disappointment with the plans of expanding our local airport and increasing the number of flights.
To begin with, I live in Colcester near the northern border of the airport territory. As a result of this, my family as well as many local dwellers suffer from unbearable noise, which is emitted by planes an helicopters constantly landing and taking off. We have complained several times to the National Airtraffic Agency, as well the airport’s managers themselves, but without any reasonable response. As you may understand, the expanding of the airport with the simultaneous increasing in the number of flights would only worsen the situation with the noise. In such case, we would take the airport’s managers to court.
In addition, the ecological condition of our region is deteriorating with each year due to the increasing percentage of the airplanes’ exhaust gases in the atmosphere. We are connected with the Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace organizations, which provides us with the results of independent researches of the local air.
I hope you will publicise this information, because these days it is a hot potato in our region.
Yours faithfully,
John Smith

An essay
(Task: It is generally accepted that families are not so close as they used to be.
Give some reasons why this change has happened and suggest how families could be brought closer together.
Include any relevant examples from your experience)
Family relationships is one of the most important parts of a person’s life, but nowadays they are not so close as they used to be several decades ago. No one knows the exact reasons for this detrimental change; however, there are some theories about this.
First of all, the modern society seems to be obsessed with career. Everybody wants to achieve success and working more is the only way to do it in many cases. According to some scientists, the total amount of the overtime work has increased threefold over the last 20 years.
Secondly, the percentage of women in position of housewife has experienced a sharp fall since 1960s. The women’s movement for gender equality and some economic factors are the reasons for this radical change. As a result, mothers cannot afford to spend enough time with their children and, what is more, children who has experienced this lack of their mother’s attention will most certainly build their own families according to this model.
Nevertheless, there are several ways of overcoming this social problem. Firstly, the governments should establish strict penalties for the employers who encourage their employees to work overtime beyond any reasonable limit. This would give more free time to them to spend with their families.
In addition, the governments must pay salaries to parents if one of them looks after his/her children all the time without going to a job. As a result, children would get more attention from their parents and then give more attention to their own children.
To sum up, the recent problem of the weakening of family internal connections is very complicated to be solved at once. However, the sooner something is done about it, the sooner we improve the situation.
