    TASK 1- LETTER

    1 You recently bought a piece of equipment for your house but it did not work.
    You phoned the shop but no action was taken
    Write a letter to t he shop manager. In your letter
    - describe the problem with the equipment
    - explain what happened when you phoned the shop
    - say what you would like the manager to do

    2 You are unhappy about a plan to make your local airport bigger and increase the number of flights. You live near the airport
    Write a letter to your local newspaper. In your letter:
    - explain where you live;
    - describe the problem;
    - give reasons why you do not want this development

    3 You have bought a mobile phone in a tax-free shop just a few days ago, and it doesn’t work properly. Write a letter to the manager to complain about it and ask him to solve the problem

    4 You rented a car from Car Rental Company. The air conditioner has stopped working. You phoned the company a week ago but it has still not been repaired. Write a letter to the company. In your letter:
    – introduce yourself;
    – explain the situation;
    – say what action you would like the company to take

    5 You normally travel to work by train, but the railway timetable has been changed and the train you usually took no longer stops at your station

    6 You recently visited your local sports centre and were dissatisfied with the service provided. Write a letter to the manager, complaining about the service you received and suggesting improvements (Formal letter of complaint)

    7 Write a letter to your local council about a situation which created a lot of dirt on your street. In your letter
    - Explain what caused it
    - Explain how it is affecting you and your neighbours
    - Suggest how it can be solved

    8 You would like to participate in a work- related seminar in another country.
    Task: Write a letter to the person in charge of the seminar and ask for detailed information regarding the dates, program, accommodation and cost

    9 You want to apply for the following job. Write a letter to Mrs.Keller describing your previous experience and explaining why you would be suitable for this job.

    10 You have seen an advertisement for a weekend job as a local tour guide showing visitors around your city. Give your reasons for wanting the job, explain why you think you can do the job, describe any relevant experience you have

    11 You recently moved to a different house
    Explain why you have moved
    Describe the new house
    Invite your friend to come and visit

    12 A student finds accommodation

    13 Last month you had a holiday overseas where you stayed with some friends. They have just sent you some photos of your holiday

    Write a letter. In your letter
    - thank them for the photos and for the holiday
    - explain why you didn’t write earlier
    - invite them to come and stay with you

    14 You are going to travel abroad for two months and while you are away a friend would like to live in your apartment. Write to the owner of the apartment explaining the situation

    In your letter:
    - explain that you are going to travel abroad;
    - describe your friend and say why he/ she would be a good tenant;
    - ask whether the owner will agree to this

    15 You recently changed jobs, and you want to tell a person who you used to work with about your change of job

    Write a letter to that person. In your letter:
    - describe your new job;
    - explain whether you think it was a good idea to change jobs;
    - suggest that you meet again soon

    16 You have just returned home after living with a family in an English-speaking country for six months. You now realize that you left a small bag of personal possessions in your room. Write to the family describing the things you left behind. Ask them to send some or all of them to you. Offer to cover the costs.

    17 You have recently moved to a different house.
    Write a letter to an English-speaking friend. In your letter
    - explain why you have moved
    - describe the new house
    - invite your friend to come and visit

    18 You are staying in rented accommodation. You recently held a party to celebrate your birthday. Several neighbours have complained to your landlord about the noise.

    Write a letter to your landlord. In your letter:
    - apologise for the disturbance
    - explain the situation
    - say how you will remedy the situation

    19 You have recently started work in a new company

    Write a letter to an English- speaking friend
    Explain why you changed jobs
    Describe your new job
    Tell him/ her your other news

    20 You are working for a company. You need to take some time off work and want to ask your manager about this

    Write a letter to your manager. In your letter:
    - explain why you want to take time off work;
    - give details of the amount of time you need;
    - suggest how your work could be covered while you are away

    21 You successfully passed a job interview. You are expected to start on November 15, but you will not be available on that date. Write a letter to your boss, explaining your situation, expressing your concern and suggesting a solution

    22 An English-speaking friend wants to spend a two-week holiday in your region and has written asking for information and advice

    Write a letter to your friend:
    - offer to find somewhere to stay
    - give advice about what to do
    - give information about what clothes to bring

    23 You borrowed some books from your school or college library. Unfortunately you have to go away to visit a sick relative and cannot return the books in time
    Write a letter to the library. Explain what has happened and tell them what you want to do about it

    24 You are due to start a new job next week but you will not be able to because you have some problems

    Write a letter to your new employer. In your letter:
    - explain your situation;
    - describe your problem;
    - tell him/ her when you think you can start

    25 You are a gift shop keeper. Write a letter to your supplier to let him know that you won’t need the merchandise you have ordered. Explain your situation and suggest solution


    26 You are a secretary, planning a corporate event. Write a letter to Entertainment Company, explaining what kind of party you would like it to be, indicate and time of event and your special requests

    27 You have had a bank account for a few years. Recently you received a letter from the bank stating that your account is $240 overdrawn and you will be charged $70 which will be taken directly from your account. You know that this information is incorrect.
    Write a letter to the bank. Explain what happened and say what you would like them to do about it.

    28 On a recent holiday you lost a valuable item. Fortunately you have travel insurance to cover the cost of anything lost.

    Write a letter to the manager of your insurance company. In your letter:
    - describe the item you lost;
    - explain how you lost it;
    - tell the insurance company what you would like them to do



    TASK 2- ESSAY


    1 Some people believe that travelling alone is far better that travelling with a group. Others be-lieve that this is dangerous and should not be encouraged by the parents of young people. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion

    2 Some people think that it is better to educate boys and girls in separate schools. Others, howev-er, believe that boys and girls benefit more from attending mixed schools. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion

    3 Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of travelling by plane

    4 Some people prefer to live in a house, while others feel that there are more advantages to living in an apartment. Are there more advantages than disadvantages of living in a house compared with living in an apartment?

    5 Many people argue that exams are the best way to assess people’s competence and that no bet-ter system has yet been found. Others say they are unfair, unhelpful and out of date. Do you think the benefits of exams outweigh the disadvantages?

    6 In some countries people who have high incomes pay very high taxes. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this for individuals and for the country as a whole?

    7 Some people think that the government should pay one of the parents of very young children to stay at home to look after their children. What do you think would be the advantages and disadvantages of this policy?


    8 Modern societies need specialists in certain fields, but not in others. Some people, therefore, think that governments should pay university fees for students who study subjects that are needed by so-ciety. Those who choose to study less relevant subjects should not receive government funding. Would the advantages of such an educational policy outweigh the disadvantages?

    9 We are becoming increasingly dependent on computers. They are used in business, hospitals, crime detection and even to fly planes. What things will they be used in the future? Is this dependence on computers a good thing or should we be more suspicious of their benefits?

    10 Being a celebrity- such as a famous film star or sports personality- brings problems as well as benefits. Do you think that being a celebrity brings more benefits or more problems?

    11 Some people think that the teenage years are the happiest times of most people’s lives. Other think that adult life brings more happiness, in spite of greater responsibilities. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

    12 Many people choose to copy celebrities seen on TV and in magazines. Why is this happening? Is it a positive or a negative development?
    13 Some people regard video games as harmless fun, or even as a useful educational tool. Others, however, believe that videos games are having an adverse effect on the people who play them. In your opinion, do the benefits of video games outweigh the drawbacks?

    14 Some people feel that entertainers (e.g. film stars, pop musicians or sport stars) are paid too much money. Do you agree or disagree? Which other types of job should be highly paid?

    15 Some governments say how may children in a family can hare in their country. They may con-trol the number of children someone has through taxes. It is sometimes necessary and right for a govern-ment to control the population in this way. Do you agree or disagree?

    16 Some people believe that children’s leisure activities must be educated, otherwise they are a complete waste of time. Do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your experience

    17 Popular events like the football World Cup and other international sporting occasions are es-sential in causing international tensions and releasing patriotic emotions in a safe way. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

    18 Teaching children and young people how to behave is the responsibility of parents, not schools or the government. To what extent do you agree or disagree

    19 Education is the only means to improve the social and psychological well-being of people. To what extent do you agree or disagree

    20 Too much money is spent by individuals and governments on making themselves and the areas they live in look beautiful. This is wasteful and it has no useful purpose. Instead, the money should be spent on improving individuals’ health. Do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

    21 Governments spend millions of dollars each year on their space programmes. Most recently, Mars is the focus of scientists' attention. Some people think this money would be better spent on dealing with problems closer to home. Do you agree or disagree?

    22 Increasing the price of petrol is the best way to solve groming traffic and pollution problems. To what extend do you agree or disagree? What other measures do you think might be effective?

    23 Some people believe that music has no practical value and should not be taught in schools. In-stead, they think schools should teach useful subjects such as computing and science. Do you agree or disagree?

    24 The birth rate in most developed countries is predicted to begin to fall over the next 50 years. By 2030 it is estimated that over one third of the population in most developed countries will be aged 65 and over. What effects will these predictions have on developed countries if they prove true? What can be done now to deal with this situation?

    25 It is generally accepted that families are not as close as they used to be. Give some reasons why this charge has happened and suggest how families could be brought closer together. Include any relevant examples from your experience

    26 Some people believe that having a pet such as a cat or a dog helps old people to have a more enjoyable life and to stay healthier. How do you think old people benefit from having a pet? Do you think there are any problems in old people having a pet?

    27 Some people believe that children are given too much free time. They feel that this time should be used to do more school work. How do you think children should spend their free time?

    28 Today more people are travelling than even before. Why is this the case? What are the benefits of travelling for the traveler?

    29 I though societies around the world are richer and more advanced than ever before, people are not as happy as they used to be. Some people, therefore, feel that in order to be happy it is better for peo-ple to be poor and less advanced. Do you agree or disagree?

    30 Mobile phones and the Internet have made it easier to “stay in contact with other people. How-ever, as a lot of time is spent using telephones and computers, there is less face-to-face contact and direct communication. Is the growing use of communications technology a positive or a negative development for society?

    31 In some large cities, people have to pay a fee when they drive their cars into the city centre, in a policy to reduce the number or cars in the city. Give reasons in support of and opposing this policy, and give your own opinion

    32 In some countries, many people do not have enough money to access the Internet. Should gov-ernments be responsible for ensuring that everyone can get access to the Internet?

    33 Some countries have laws that prohibit animals being used in circuses or other forms of enter-tainment because it is cruel to keep animals in an environment that can cause them stress. Should all countries have laws to prevent animals being used in circuses and similar forms of entertainment?

    34 Although we have a better standard of living nowadays, in many ways our quality of life is not as good as in the past because we are always too busy to enjoy what we have

    35 Millions of people in the world do not have enough to eat. What do you think are some of the causes of this problem and what measures could be taken to reduce it?

    36 In the past, sporting champions used to be motivated primarily by the desire to win a match or to break world records. These days, they are more likely to be motivated by prize money and the oppor-tunity to be famous. What message does this send to young people and how does this attitude to sport af-fect the sports themselves?

    37 “Failure is proof that the desire wasn’t strong enough”. To what extent do you agree with this statement?

    38 Some employers reward members of staff for their exceptional contribution to the company by giving them extra money. This practice can act as an incentive for some but may also have a negative im-pact on others. To what extent is this style of management effective? Are there better ways of encourag-ing employees to work hard?

    39 The exploration and development of safe alternatives to fossil fuels should be the most im-portant global priority today. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

    40 Music is played in every society and culture in the world today. Some people think that music brings only benefits to individuals and societies. Others, however, think that music can have a negative influence on both. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

    41 Young people in the modern world seem to have more power and influence than any previous young generation. Why is this case? What impact does this have on the relationship between old and young people? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience

    51 In many countries, children are engaged in some kind of paid work. Some people regard this as completely wrong, while others consider it as valuable work experience, important for leaning and taking responsibility. What are your opinions on this?

    52 In some society it is increasingly common to try to achieve good health and fitness though physically demanding sports, special diet, or preventative medicine convention or alternative. Some peo-ple, however, believe that the best way to stay fit and healthy is simply to lead a normal life. To what ex-tent do you agree with this opinion?

    53 In some countries, people are forced to retire when they reach a certain age, What are the ad-vantages and disadvantages of this? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience

    54 The advantages of the spread of English as a global language will continue to outweigh its dis-advantages. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

    55 Some experts believe that it is better for children to begin learning a foreign language at primary school rather than secondary school. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?

    56 Some people say that fashion for young people is becoming an important thing. This is causing a problem for the society and has its negative effects on young people. Do you agree or disagree? Give examples from you experience.
