Many people in the world do not have enough food to eat. The application of technology to food production, such as in the production of genetically modified food, is the best solution to feeding the world’s population. Do you agree?
Every day thousands of people die from starvation and malnutrition all over the world. To solve this problem it was suggested to engineer plants at a genetic level. The purpose of this technology is to enhance desirable traits in plants to increase crop yields. I am inclined to join supporters of biotechnology as there is no other comparable solution to providing an adequate supply of food for increasing population of the world.
Biotechnology can be used to increase food production in a number of ways. For instance developing aluminium tolerance in plants can increase productivity of the land which is affected by aluminium toxicity. High and consistent harvests can also be achieved by developing disease resistant plants. Deaths from poor nutrition can be reduced and eventually eliminated by developing plants with improved nutritional content. At the moment scientists are working on creating rice strain that will deliver more vitamin A. This would save lives of many children that are sick with measles and diarrhoea, and also prevent child blindness. Another project, scientists are working on, is developing plants with enriched iron content. This would cure iron deficiency that affect thousands of women. There is one more advantage of biotechnology: plants producing natural insecticide and herbicide resistant plants can be developed.
Even though there are objections to growing crops that have been genetically modified, I believe, advantages of biotechnology significantly outweigh a few minor disadvantages. Taking the above-mentioned into consideration, I think biotechnology responds to the demands of the population in the best way possible.
