Australia's Government says the number of overseas workers employed under a program of temporary work visas last month was the lowest in four years.
Numbers for April were 23 per cent down on March and 64 per cent down on September last year.
The Immigration Minister, Chris Evans, says the fall in skilled migrants employed on the 457 visa is partly due to the economic downturn.
But he says several government changes, including a stricter English language skills requirement, have also had an impact.
