There have been many technological developments in the 20th century, for example in transport, telecommunication and health.
What technological development do you think has been the most important? How has it changed people` s lives? Have all changes been positive?
Give reasons for your answer.
In the 20th century there has been a breakthrough in many fields of science, resulting in a wide range of inventions that have changed our life dramatically. Some of them are considered to be positive, while others can be life-threatening. I believe that the most significant development in the 20th century has been the invention of the method of getting energy from splitting the atom.
The consumption of fossil fuels has increased tremendously over the past centuries. This tendency has lead to the fact that half of all the crude oil, coal and natural gas has been depleted. In order to satisfy the growing needs of the developed world, the mankind has learned the way to get a huge amount of energy from splitting the atom. Many nuclear power plants have been constructed all over the world since that invention. Taking into consideration the fact that atomic energy is considerably cheaper and a lot less harmful for environment, it is understood that lives of millions have improved drastically in many aspects, such as higher living standards and better health. For instance, in Japan after the construction of Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, the prices on electricity dropped down and the Japanese became less dependant on energy resources exported overseas. Thus, it is obvious why I tend to think that the invention of nuclear energy is most life-changing.
Nevertheless, the above mentioned invention, like many others of the 20th century, has an adverse side. It is transparent that accidents do occur in people's everyday life. The consequences of such accidents may vary from unimportant to disastrous. What is really essential is to understand that the consequences of disasters with nuclear plants involved can simply wipe out the life from the Earth's soil. For example, Chernobyl nuclear plant accident has shown the world that a rather small mistake entailed the disaster the mankind has never experienced before.
In conclusion, the greatest achievement of the 20th century, such as an invention of splitting the atom, has completely changed the look of the modern world. However, with the great possibility comes even greater responsibility.
