I'm going to import my cat from non-approved country (Russia) through country of 3rd category (Finland) to Australia. My cat has valid Rabies Vaccination which had been done in Russia on March 2014. Soon he will be in Finland. After cat arrives in Finland it will get a vaccination against rabies. Could you please clarify, how long should we wait between Rabies Vaccination which will be done in approved country (previous vaccination was done in non-approved country) and Rabies Neutralising Antibody Titre Test (RNATT). Thank's in advance!
DAFF:
The Department of Agriculture does not have any minimum time period that must elapse between rabies vaccination and RNAT testing. As the cat has previously been vaccinated against rabies, sufficient antibodies could already be present to register a successful test. As such, you could elect to have the rabies vaccination and RNAT test performed on the same day if you wish. You may like to discuss this with the preparing veterinarian.
Please note that, as you have identified, the cat will still need a rabies vaccination performed in an approved country even if the vaccine administered in the non-approved country has not yet expired.
